Fashanu backs Mikel’s Teda move .Says financial security is key

Former England forward John Fashanu believes John Obi Mikel’s move to Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda was good for financial security. The 29-year-old who was not given a chance by Chelsea’s Antonio Conte joined the team in China despite receiving several offers from Europe.

“It is great for anybody who has the capacity to go abroad into the western or the eastern world,” Fashanu told Goal.

“I’m very happy, financial security in the game of football; I must tell is quite easy to achieve. “As long as he knows that the football played there [China] is not same as the football in Europe or back home. Good luck to him, I’m happy.

“We must always remember that some players are playing for money, wealth, financial security. Some players also play because they want to achieve the greatest honours.

“Because you have somebody who wants to play for money, doesn’t make him a bad person. Some players would say I had no opportunity to go and play in China.

“I could have gone to China to make millions. Looking back in retrospect maybe I should have gone to play in China and made billions over there and not play in England. “So each player has his own individual choice.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo Say's Some people believe that if ‘my kinsman’ steals it is ok

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called on anti-corruption agencies in the country to step up their engagement with the Nigerian public, especially because there are still those who think when a politician, who is their kinfolk steals, it is permissible.

Osinbajo, made the observation earlier, yesterday, while meeting with a delegation of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC led by its Chairman, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, at the Presidential Villa.

Osinbajo said:

“How we communicate what is going on regarding corruption is important. There are still those who think a politician who steals is some kind of Robin Hood, instead of being vilified.

“Some people believe that if ‘my kinsman’ steals it is ok,” stressing that it is important to completely delegitimise corruption especially through the way it is communicated.

He said: “I commend the excellent work you have done so far from the beginning,” he told the PACAC delegation, adding that the committee has done very well removing skepticism as to whether an anti-corruption initiative can work well in the country.”

In his comments, Prof. Sagay said PACAC had engaged with all anti-corruption agencies in the country, including the police and the judiciary.

“We are cooperating effectively well with them,” he disclosed.

Sagay, who was accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the committee, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye and members, including Hadiza Bala-Usman, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, called for a harmonized National Anti-Corruption Strategy for the Federal Government.

Former Aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has also reacted to the news of General Adeboye’s retirement as Redeemed Christian Church National General Overseer.  Recall that Adeboye said he was stepping down because of the new rules of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), having passed the retirement age and term(s) of office.

Fani-Kayode noted that government does not have any business meddling in the affairs of the church.

Pastor Adeboye Warns FG ‘Stop Interfering In Church Affairs’

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) General Overseer (Worldwide), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has warned the Federal Government to stop meddling in Church matters.

Adeboye, who spoke yesterday, January 8 at the Redemption Camp, Kilometre 46, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, expressed worries over deliberate anti-Christian laws by the Federal Government against Christians

The government has been showing increasing interest in church affairs. Unfortunately, for us in RCCG, it might not be very helpful,” Adeboye said.

He accused the government of not allowing the church (RCCG) to continue with its stipulated lifetime 100 per cent salaries to its pensioners.

“For example, when I decided on what will be the pension of our pastors, what I decided is not done anywhere in the world. That somebody will retire and continue to earn full salaries all his lifetime.

“This, I started, but government stepped in and made a law that we should be contributing to pension fund.

“We have to obey and we started doing that. The result is that pastors don’t get as much as they were getting under our own previous arrangement. But, what can we do? We have to obey the law,” he disclosed.
Adeboye disclosed that other fresh laws had been enacted by the government to ruffle the feathers of the church in the country, with a particularly targeted at the RCCG.

Adeboye also urged members of RCCG to register as card-carrying members of political parties ahead 2019 general elections.

His words: “Now there are fresh laws. We have a rough idea of what the law is about.

“Some people believe that RCCG is becoming too influential and we’re going to be more influential. When you get home, tell members to join a political party.

“Join a party and become a card-carrying member of any party. Just join any party. We shall decide issues right from the ward level.

“If you are not active at ward level, you’ll do what they plan and say at the top. Enrol in any party of your choice and have a card. When holding meetings at ward level to choose delegates, be there.”

“One Muslim in Ibadan said years ago that he didn’t know what’s wrong with Christians; that we help them to occupy political positions and refused to capitalise on our population. That’s going to change from now,” Adeboye stated.

AFCON 2017: It’s sad Nigeria won’t be in Gabon — Chukwu

Super Eagles after winning the 2013 Afcon final
As top African soccer nations are gearing up for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations which begins in Gabon January 14, the reality of Super Eagles failure to qualify for the event is beginning to dawn on Nigerians.

It is the second time the Super Eagles will be missing out from the continental show piece. Former Nigeria international and one time national team coach, Christian Chukwu is one of millions of Nigerians bemoaning the national team’s absence from the tournament.

“It is sad the Eagles are not going to take part. In the past, we thought it was our birthright to be at every edition. But this year, we are not there. It is painful,” Chukwu said.

In the absence of the Super Eagles, the former Nigeria captain would not be dragged into predicting which country will emerge winners of the Gabon 2017 tournament.

He said, “If I had watched them play a match or two, I could perhaps, hazard a prediction. But right now, with countries like Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon, DR.Congo and hosts Gabon, I cannot guess because they are all heavyweights of African football.

“Remember, there are no more minnows in world football. Any team that is in Gabon is a potential champion. Let us watch them play first, before we can start making predictions,” he said. He admitted he would watch the matches without pressure because the national team won’t be there. “I will sit back and enjoy the matches on television with ease.”

Tottenham vs Chelsea: Conte, players bitter

Tottenham ended Chelsea’s attempt to make Premier League history with a 14th successive victory by beating the title pacesetters 2-0 at White Hart Lane on Wednesday. Spurs moved up to third place as headers from Dele Alli either side of half-time made the difference to leave Chelsea five points ahead of Liverpool in second place.

Alli rose to meet Christian Eriksen’s cross in first-half stoppage time and the same pair combined to put the game out of Chelsea’s reach in the 54th minute. Eden Hazard had Chelsea’s two best chances in each half but Spurs closed out the victory in comfort to put north London rivals Arsenal out of the top four.

The win left the hosts seven points off the top after their fifth successive league win. Tottenham’s season was at a tipping point after a disappointing Champions League exit at the group stage and the poor performance in defeat at Manchester United in early December. But they have since responded magnificently.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are gathering impressive momentum, illustrated by the manner in which they overcame a Chelsea side that was starting to carry an air of impregnability.

The 4-1 wins at Southampton and Watford served as a warning that Spurs were approaching the sort of form that carried them close to the title last season.

Wednesday’s performance confirmed their growing confidence and stature. Spurs have recaptured their intensity and energy and when this is bolted on to the quality provided here by the likes of Alli and Eriksen, it makes them a formidable prospect.

Manchester City had already found Spurs too hot to handle at White Hart Lane this season — and Chelsea suffered a similar fate. Alli endured a quiet start to the season, perhaps in the aftermath of England’s debacle at Euro 2016 — but the 20-year-old is firing on all cylinders now.

Alli’s headed double here made it seven goals in his last four games. It was the third time in succession he has scored twice in a game after doing the same at Southampton and Watford. Pochettino said before the game that he regarded Alli as “the most important player to emerge in English football in recent years’’. And here the £5 million signing from MK Dons backed up his manager’s confident words with a consummate all-round display crowned by the two towering headers which proved decisive. Alli received a standing ovation when he was replaced in the closing minutes after showing the quality that will make him an integral part of the future of both Spurs and England.

Chelsea’s perfectionist manager Antonio Conte and his players will be bitterly disappointed they could not achieve Premier League history with a 14th successive win. It would have matched the mark set across the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons by Arsenal. However they remain in prime position in the title race. They still have a healthy five-point lead over Liverpool in second place and have come a long way since their last Premier League defeat at Arsenal on Sept.

 24. It was a 3-0 loss which left them eight points adrift of then-leaders Manchester City in eighth place. Conte has transformed the mood around the team and the club and while their superb run may be at an end, this is a team fully equipped to go the distance in the title race.

The world’s highest bridge has opened to traffic in China, connecting two provinces in the mountainous southwest and reducing travel times by as much as three-quarters, local authorities said Friday.

The Beipanjiang Bridge soars 565 metres (1,854 feet) above a river and connects the two mountainous provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou, the Guizhou provincial transport department said in a statement on its official website.

The bridge cut travel times between Xuanwei in Yunnan to Shuicheng in Guizhou from more than four hours to around one, a truck driver surnamed Duan was quoted by the official news agency Xinhua as saying after the bridge opened Thursday.

It was “very convenient for people who want to travel between these two places”, he added.

The 1,341-metre span cost over 1 billion yuan ($144 million) to build, according to local newspaper Guizhou Daily.

It overtook the Si Du River Bridge in the central province of Hubei to become the world’s highest bridge, a separate statement by the provincial transport department said earlier.

Several of the world’s highest bridges are in China, although the world’s tallest bridge — measured in terms of the height of its own structure, rather than the distance to the ground — remains France’s Millau viaduct at 343 metres.

Ronaldo turns down audacious Chinese bid

World player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo rejected a world record £257million (300m euros, $317m) bid from China, his agent Jorge Mendes has claimed.

Mendes told Sky Sports Italia on Thursday that the unnamed Chinese Super League side had offered the 31-year-old Portuguese superstar a record £85m a year as salary.

“From China, they’ve offered 300m euros to Real Madrid and more than 100m (euros) per year to the player,” said Mendes.

“But money is not everything. Real Madrid is his life. Cristiano is happy at Real Madrid and it is impossible to go to China.”

China has through its Super League clubs flexed considerable financial muscle in the international transfer market, most recently buying Brazilian international Oscar from Chelsea and Argentinian veteran Carlos Tevez — with the latter reportedly set to earn 38million euros a year.

However, Mendes said the star of his stable was out of reach.

“The Chinese market is a new market,” said Mendes.

“They can buy a lot of players, but then again it is impossible to go for Ronaldo.

“Cristiano is the best player in the world and best ever. It is normal to have some offers.

“He won the European Championship with Portugal, it’s like winning the Italian league with Genoa: they were not the favourite,” added the 50-year-old Portuguese.

Can’t find incubator? Kangaroo mother care saves preterm babies

In Nigeria today, hundreds of premature babies die daily while their parents run from one hospital to another, searching for incubator to care for them.

Saidat Alli, 31 year old woman residing in Adeolu street Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, is one of such mothers who has lost her premature baby while searching for an incubator.

At 28 weeks’ pregnancy, Saidat started feeling severe abdominal cramps late one Saturday night.
“Then, early in the morning I got up and found myself bleeding. It was 5.30am on a Sunday. My husband rushed me to a nearby private hospital, Saidat recalled.

“At the hospital, the doctor asked if I was feeling any pain, and I told him yes. He then asked if the pain was coming every 10 minutes or so, I also told him it was. I was shocked when the doctor informed me that the pain was contraction.

I knew that at 28 weeks, it was too early for me to deliver. My baby was coming out prematurely. Within a short period, our baby boy- Saheed came out, very tiny and frail, weighing 1.2kg”, she recounted.

That was when their real problem started; the urgent need for an incubator and other specialized care, and the realization that the hospital has none. According to Saidat, the hospital has no incubator, so they were quickly referred to Ajeromi General hospital.

“At the general hospital, we were told that there was no free incubator. We were again referred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). At LASUTH, we were again turn down because the incubators were all occupied. They referred us to Mother and Child Care Centre (MCC) Ajegunle.

The journey from one hospital to another, started taking its toll on the baby; the traffic, and the smoke on the road was too much. Despite wrapping the baby well, I can feel it struggling to breath. On our way to the next hospital, I noticed that baby Saheed was no longer breathing. He died before we could get to the hospital”, she said.

Like baby Saheed, about 87,600 under-five children die yearly due to premature birth complication, according to Mamaye 2016 factsheet on preterm births in Nigeria. Sadly, many of these deaths could have been prevented if proper and specialized care had been available and accessible immediately after birth.

Unknown to many parents, a skin-to-skin form of care between a mother and her baby, known as kangaroo mother care (KMC), is an effective alternative to an incubator. Experts said, the KMC, if initiated immediately and continuously after birth, will save premature babies from death or complications.

Speaking during a Mamaye Media Roundtable on Prematurity in Nigeria, a Professor of Pediatrics at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and president of Nigeria Society of Neonatal Medicine, Prof. Chinyere Ezeaka, explained that KMC is an effective alternative to an incubator.

According to her, 980,000 preterm and low birth weight babies are born each year in Nigeria, yet most health facilities cannot care for them.

she said the solution is KMC; “Kangaroo Mother Care is a method of care practiced on babies, newborn, usually preterm, and infants in which the infant is held skin-to-skin with an adult.

The adult could be the mother, father, substitute caregiver or a relation who holds or ties the baby skin-to-skin with a thick cloth. So instead of parents running about looking for incubators which is expensive and not so available, they should practice the KMC on their babies.

“It is evidence-based and an affordable alternative to incubator care. Presently in Nigeria, there are not enough incubators at the health facilities. We also have issue of manpower, power supply, and general maintenance.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Lancet Neonatal Survival series (2005) have recommended KMC as a standard of care for preterm babies especially in low income countries”.

She further said that Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) will help stabilize the baby’s heart rate, improve his breathing pattern, improve oxygen saturation in the baby and helps him to gain weights among others.

According to the don, newborn mortality remains one of the challenges confronting Nigeria and other less developed countries.

“Each year an estimated 240,000 newborn babies die in their first month of life out of approximately 7 million annual deliveries. Nigeria ranks the highest in Africa in terms of the number of neonatal deaths and second globally.

Premature birth complication is the direct cause of 31 per cent of newborn deaths in Nigeria and 80 per cent indirect cause. Globally, the country ranks 3rd among countries with the highest number of preterm births with an annual preterm birth rate of about 773,600”, Ezeaka noted.

According to her, emphasis should be on prevention of premature birth; “There must be early antenatal care to identify and manage high risk pregnancies.

Problems related to teenage pregnancies, malnutrition and multiple births can increase the chances of preterm births. Other causes include urinary tract infections, diabetes, kidney diseases, hypertension, and hard labour”.

808 killed in Southern Kaduna, Catholic Church alleges

The Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan alleged yesterday that the latest attacks in southern Kaduna State had claimed 808 lives with 57 injured.

It also alleged that 53 villages were attacked

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has described the attackers as foreign Fulani herdsmen, who were avenging past attacks on them and their livestock.

Addressing a news conference in Kafanchan, the Vicar General of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan, Ibrahim Yakubu, said the government failed to protect locals.

Yakubu, who addressed reporters along with four other priests, said four local government areas had been attacked with 808 people killed and 1,422 houses, 16 churches, 19 shops, and one primary school destroyed.

He added: “Unfortunately, our government both at the centre and state levels have failed woefully. If anything, government has shown outright partisanship in favour of the herdsmen to the disappointment of the majority Southern Kaduna indigenes and Christians.”

The cleric, however, called for immediate end to attacks, and demanded compensation for all families that lost loved ones or property. He also called for the establishment of a commission of inquiry to investigate the causes of the crisis.

Senator Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central) also lamented that Southern Kaduna had become a slaughter house and a cemetery where human lives had become so cheap to destroy.

Sani, who visited his colleague representing Kaduna South, Senator Danjuma La’ah, called for security presence in all the villages and towns, as well as civilians Joint Task Force (JTF) to protect the communities.

“The way out of this mess is the need for security presence in all the villages and towns in Southern Kaduna. There is also need for Civilian JTF where the communities will be fully involved, funding and supporting, to protect their own communities.

“It is unfortunate that Southern Kaduna has become a slaughter house and a cemetery, where human lives have become so cheap to destroy.”

While expressing his heart-felt sympathy to the people over the magnitude of destruction of lives and property he noted: “Southern Kaduna killings is a reality in Nigeria and northern part of this country in particular of what has been happening for years. It is very clear the government is unable to protect lives and property of its citizens.”

“The tragedy in Southern Kaduna is also translating to Niger State, which is close to Abuja. So you can see the danger of these killings to other cities in the country.”

“There is need for an immediate action to stop the activities of these herdsmen killing innocent people,” he said

Sani suggested that there was need for an economic master plan for Southern Kaduna to address the neglect, abandonment, poverty and underdevelopment that have ravaged the zone for a very long time.

The senator argued that “neutralising Southern Kaduna is not enough without any economic agenda”. “We must develop the area and make all parts of the area accessible by providing infrastructure and developing social amenities as the only way we can have a permanent solution.

“Also, there is need to have consultative community interactions to enable the natives and cattle rearers and others ethnic groups interact for better understanding.

“Enough is a word that can only be qualified when there is satisfaction by the side of those who are victims. The first right in the Nigerian constitution is the right to life.

“The government cannot be seen to say it has done enough until and unless these killings stop. The Federal Government must provide the necessary environment.

“I think ending this problem has gone beyond what people are thinking. It should be accompanied with an economic blueprint to face the problem of underdevelopment and neglect of the Southern part of the state.

“It is very clear that the people of Southern Kaduna are being treated as outcast. They only listen to Plateau media stations to know what is happening in Nigeria.

“Southern Kaduna depends on Plateau to exist as human beings. It is very unfortunate,” Sani said.
